2007, 2008 Rain Season Figures

Posted by John . Filed under General |

The 2007-2008 rain season officially came to a closed on June 30th, and thanks to an early wet season we manage to just exceed the average rainfall amount for the rain season (which in California is July through June).

Palm Springs total rainfall was 5.40 inches, 17 hundredths of an inch above average. If we average the past 30 years of records Palm Springs average rainfall is 5.23 inches. The majority of moisture came from a very wet, early season that started in late November and lasted through late January. Then the season came to an abrupt halt from February through June and we saw, at the most, a few hundredths of an inch.

Below is a graph showing both the temperature and rainfall data for the Palm Springs Airport. Click to enlarge.

Now if we take a look at the same graph for calendar year 2008, we see a rain deficit of just under an inch. Again, due to very dry late rain season months:

(not precipitation related but note the rather large drop in temperatures that we saw due to that late May low pressure system that brought us low 70’s in late May!)

Looking at all these figure it is important to keep in mind that we’re only focusing on Palm Springs official figures from the National Weather Service here. Here at DesertWeather (Thousand Palms, 7 miles east) we only received 3.52 inches of rain, a big difference for only 7 miles away. So with that being said rainfall can very significantly in a short distance.
