Fall is here, where is the cooler weather?

Hot ThermoIt was a warm one today! Palm Springs hit 111° which tied the record for this day set back in 1947. Climate data puts the average for September 26th at 98°, so that equates to 13 degrees above average!

Much cooler temperatures are on the way. Next week a trough will pass just to the north of us and bring fall like weather for several days before rebounding slightly next weekend. Highs only in the  low 90′s are expected Wednesday and Thursday, with a few models showing a possibility of not even reaching 90! Long range models show that this 100+ weather is over for good!

Other select records set today:

  • Indio at 112° breaking record of  111° in 1963
  • Borrego at 109° breaking record of 108° in 1991
  • Thermal tied its record at 110°

First Day of Autumn

Today marks the first day of Autumn. Below is some information I posted a few years back that I thought I’d repost for this occasion.

“Did you ever wonder why leaves change colors in the fall?
A pigment called chlorophyll helps turn water, air and light energy into food for plants. When a plant contains a lot of chlorophyll, it appears green. There are also other pigments present, such as purple, red and yellow, but these colors are masked by the green chlorophyll. During the fall, the production of chlorophyll decreases due to the change in temperature. This is when the other pigments appear, and the leaves display brilliant colors. But this also means that the leaves are reaching the end of their life cycle.

The Autumnal Equinox
The point in late September when the sun appears to cross the celestial equator from north to south marks the beginning of autumn. On this date, the night becomes longer than the day for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.

Autumn vs. Fall
The word autumn refers to the autumnal equinox that marks the start of the season, but what about fall? An online search indicates people have several theories about where the use of the word fall comes from. Some say its simply because of falling leaves. Others say its a term that started in the South where the word autumn seemed to invoke a colorful season that didnt occur there. It seems that the prevalence of one term over the other follows geography.”

There are an increasing amount of websites out there, both business and personal, that display a DesertWeather.com’s Weather Stamp that I’d like to send thanks to.  One way that I’d like to accomplish this is by promoting their site and in return, showing my thanks.

From time to time I would like to post the site name and a link to their site. In return promoting each site.  Please take the opportunity and show your support by visiting each site.

A few examples of the different weather stamp versions available to display on your site:
